Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition, which causes numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and arm. CTS is caused by a compressed nerve in the hand carpal tunnel, which is a narrow passage located on the palm side of your wrist just below your hand. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is mostly caused by repetitive hand motion; however, other health problems including smoking or even the anatomy of the wrist can be a cause. Proper treatment like the one you receive at the Pompano Medical Center usually relieves the pain and tingling sensation in the hand restoring its function.

Symptoms

Carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms usually start gradually. The first symptoms often include numbness or tingling in your thumb, index and middle fingers that comes and goes.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can also cause some discomfort in your wrist area and in the palm of your hand.  Some of the common CTS symptoms are:

  • Tingling or numbness: You may experience tingling and numbness in your fingers or your hand in general. Usually, the fingers affected are the thumb and index, middle or ring fingers; however, your little finger is not affected. Sometimes there is also an electric-like shock in these fingers. The sensation can also travel from your wrist up to your arm. These symptoms usually occur when holding a steering wheel, phone or even reading a newspaper. The sensation can be strong enough to even wake you from sleep. Many people try to “shake out” their hands to try to relieve their symptoms (numbness, pain, etc.). The numb feeling could become a constant visitor over time.
  • Weakness: Your hand may become weak and not be able to even hold objects. This sensation may be due to the numbness in your hand or due to the weakness of the thumb’s pinching muscles, which are also controlled by the same median nerve that causes CTS when damaged.

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by the presence of some sort of pressure on the median nerve in your wrist.

The median nerve is that nerve that runs from your forearm via a passageway in your wrist (called the carpal tunnel) into your hand. The nerve provides sensation to the palm side of your thumb and fingers, except the little finger, that is why it doesn’t affect the little finger when harmed. It also provides nerve signals to move the muscles around the base of your thumb which provides your hand with its motor functions.

Anything that puts pressure or irritates the median nerve inside the carpal tunnel space can lead to what is called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Experiencing a wrist fracture can lead to the narrowing of the carpal tunnel thus,  irritating the nerve. Also,  swelling and inflammation resulting from rheumatoid arthritis can cause irritation in the nerve.

There is no single cause in many cases. Most of the CTS cases are a combination of risk factors that contributes to the development of the CTS condition.
